Dear Families,
Homework is an important opportunity for your child to practice essential skills that we are learning in the classroom. Below you will find the different types of homework I assign.
If you any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time!
Reading
At the beginning of the school year, we will spend much of our reading workshop time learning about choosing just right books and building reading stamina. Moving to second grade is a big change, because students are expected to take more ownership of their learning. Why is reading at home so important? I love this and I hope you do too:

As you can see, reading at home will not only strengthen your child's vocabulary, but will improve your child's fluency, comprehension, and stamina. It is important when you are reading together at night to ask questions about the book, have conversations about the characters, or problems or solutions in the story. Any meaningful conversation will strengthen your child's comprehension.
At the beginning of the school year I will expect at least 15 minutes of reading per night. As we increase our reading stamina I will expect 20 minutes per night, and perhaps we will work our way up to 30 minutes! Can your child read more than the expected time? Of course!
